While studying for her nursing degree, Sue met the true love of her life, Bruce Alan Lund, Sr., a student at Washington University School of Dental Medicine. Upon graduation, Sue was a member of the surgical nursing staff at Missouri Baptist Hospital. While in California, Sue worked as a nurse at a local hospital. In 1962, Bruce accepted a fellowship with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and they moved to the Midwest. Sue continued her nursing career at Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester.

As their family continued to grow, Sue decided to stay home as a full-time mom. They bought a small acreage in rural Stewartville and made their forever home.
