Martha York Obituary

Martha Arleen York (Arleen) passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at the Spring Valley Care Center.  Arleen was born June 4, 1919 to Edward Lenard and Mary Catherine (McClellan) Templeton in Tipton, Iowa. She was married to Charles LeRoy York, of Mechanicsville, Iowa, on August 31, 1939.  They moved to rural Stewartville, Minnesota and lived on a farm outside of town. They raised two children, Michael Lenard York and Patricia Ann Heddlesten. Arleen worked diligently as her education was extremely important to her. She achieved her Teaching Certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College in 1938, a two-year elementary education degree from the Winona State Teachers College in 1954, a Bachelor’s Degree in education in 1959, and her Master's Degree in 1967 following her thesis, “An Investigation of Curriculum Trends in Elementary School Mathematics”.  She began teaching in a one room schoolhouse in rural Cedar County and spent the final 38 years of her career as a fourth-grade teacher and librarian at Stewartville Public Schools. She retired in 1984. Throughout her retirement, she traveled throughout the United States and the world, including Europe, Australia, and her most favorite, Hawaii! Arleen was full of spice and brought laughs to her family. She was hard-working, generous, and loving. In 2019, she celebrated her 100th birthday with a luau themed party.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Carole) York of Sugar Grove, Illinois, Patricia (Derrick) Heddlesten of rural Stewartville, grandchildren Jacqueline Martini, John (Katherine) York, Anthony (Kyla) Heddlesten, Teala Heddlesten, great-grandchildren Ryan, Conor, Devin, Nolan, Logan, Carter, Piper, CJ, and Grayson.

She is met in heaven by her husband LeRoy, her parents, her brother Samuel, and her granddaughter Julee.  A private, family burial will occur in Mechanicsville, Iowa on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Rose Hill Cemetery.
