Lyle Bateman Obituary

The funeral service for Lyle R. Bateman, 89, of Stewartville,Mn. will be at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday (September 11, 2012) at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville with Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating. Burial will follow in the Frankford Cemetery in rural Spring Valley,Mn. Mr. Bateman died on Friday (September 7, 2012) from complications of cancer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester,Mn., where he had been a patient for two days.

Lyle Russell Bateman was born March 19, 1923 in rural Mower County, Mn. to Howard and Gertrude(Louks) Bateman. He grew up on the family farm, attended rural schools and moved with his family to Spring Valley where he graduated from Spring Valley H.S. in 1941. Lyle enlisted into the Merchant Marine serving overseas during W.W. II in Australia. Following his discharge in 1945 he returned to the Spring Valley area and joined the Rochester Fire Department. Lyle was married on August 5, 1954 at East St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Rock Dell,Mn to Marion E. Bale. Following their marriage the couple lived in Rochester and then rural Rochester for a number of years. Mr. Bateman was a firefighter in Rochester for 28 years until his retirement in 1979. He then co-owned a fence installation business which he helped operate for a few years. Mrs. Bateman was a service coordinater for 3M Mining Co. in it’s Rochester office for a number of years. The Batemans moved to Stewartville in 1999 where they have continued to make their home. Mr. Bateman was a member of the Stewartville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed mowing and caring for his yard and also mowed and was caretaker for the Bateman Cemetery in rural Spring Valley,Mn. He was a good athlete in high school and enjoyed golfing, bowling, following the Twins and Vikings, collected LP and 45 records and enjoyed horseback riding with Marion when they lived in rural Rochester. Lyle loved time spent with family, especially his grandson and great grandchildren.

Lyle is survived by his wife – Marion and 1 grandson –Phillip(Juanita) and great grandsons – Ashton and Devon of rural Byron,Mn. He was preceded in death by his son – Daniel, his parentas and 3 sisters and 1 brother.

Friends may call from 4 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday(9-10- 2012) at Griffin-Gray F.H. in Stewartville and 1 hr. prior to the service at the church on Tuesday morning.
