A Mass of Christian Burial for Rev. Gregory G. Havel will be held at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Stewartville, MN on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 11:00 AM.  The service will be officiated by Bishop Robert Barron with Rev. Kevin Connolly, Rev. Thomas Loomis, and fellow Priests from the Winona Diocese concelebrating. Fr. Havel died on Monday, February 5, 2024, from complications of a short illness with Cancer.

Gregory Gerard Havel was born on May 20, 1954, in Faribault, MN to John and Alice (Riedel) Havel. He moved as a young boy with his family to Stewartville, MN where he grew up and graduated from High School in 1972. He attended trade school in Pipestone, MN and worked as the manager of the meat department at the Red Owl grocery store before being called to the priesthood. 

He attended St. Mary’s University and Seminary in Winona, MN and Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD.  In 1990, Fr. Havel was ordained at the Winona Cathedral by Bishop Vlazny and shortly after, was assigned the duties of a Parochial Vicar at St. Mary’s parish in Winona, MN.  In 1993, he transferred to the Parishes of Harmony (St. Josephs), Mabel (St. Olaf), and Canton (Assumption).  After serving four years, Fr. Havel was assigned to the Parishes of Stewartville (St. Bernards), and Simpson (St. Bridgets).  He served here 11 years and oversaw the building of the current St. Bernards Catholic Church.  His next assignment was at La Crescent (Church of the Crucifixion), Dakota (Holy Cross), and Hokah (St. Peters). Here he served another 11 years including two years at Brownsville (St. Patricks). Most recently Fr. Havel, presided over the Tri-County parishes, of Wells (St. Casimir), Easton (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel), and Minnesota Lake (St. John the Baptist).

Fr. Greg was a humble, loving, kind, funny, and compassionate person. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and parishioners and loved to go fishing and golfing in his free time.  Fr. Greg was preceded in death by his parents (John and Alice) and is survived by Debbie Williams (Sister), Jennifer Williams (Niece), Brian (Alicia) Williams (Nephew), and their sons (Brock, Aidan, and Cameron).  A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 4:00-7:00 PM at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Stewartville, MN with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.  An additional hour of visitation will be held on Friday morning prior to Mass. A burial and graveside service will take place at the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar, IA at 3:30 PM.  Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville, MN.  Condolences and memories of Fr.
