The funeral service for Dennis A. Wendt, 85, a longtime Stewartville,MN resident will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday ( August 8, 2026) at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley Twsp with Rev. Marc Freiberg Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. Mr. Wendt died on Saturday ( August 1, 2026) of natural causes at Ostrander Care and Rehab in Ostrander,MN where he had been a resident for the past 2 years.
Dennis Albert Wendt was born on August 9, 1940 in Rochester,MN to Carl and Beulah (Reich) Wendt. He grew up on the family farm, attended country school and Stewartville schools, graduating from Stewartville HS in 1958. He worked on the Wendt Family farm before serving in the US Army for 2 years including duty overseas in Germany. Following his discharge he returned to Stewartville and was employed with IBM in Rochester. Dennis met his loving wife Rose Marie Johnson and they were married on November 15, 1986. Following their marriage the couple lived in Stewartville where they raised their 2 adopted children - Shawn and Annie and have continued to make their home. Dennis was a longtime employee at IBM in Rochester until his retirement and farmed the Wendt Family Farm with his brothers - Chuck and David. After retiring, he was employed as church secretary at East and West St. Olaf Lutheran Churchs in Rock Dell,MN for a number of years and part-time at Sam’s Club and Best Buy in Rochester. Rose was a longtime employee with Stewartville School District 53 in the Central School cafeteria and as a child care aide in the morning and afternoon at Tiger Time for 23 years. Mrs. Wendt died on December 16, 2023.
Dennis was a lifelong active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley Twsp,Mn where he served on the church council , taught Sunday School and ushered. He enjoyed photography, fishing, playing softball back in the day, following the MN Twins and traveling with Rose. Dennis enjoyed visiting with friends and loved time spent with Rose and both of their large families.
Dennis’s family wish to thank all the Staff at the Ostrander Care Center for his outstanding care- he loved living there!
Dennis is survived by his son - Shawn Wendt of Minneapolis,MN and daughter Annie Avilas of TX; 2 sisters – Cheralyn(Dennis) Runkle of rural Racine,MN ; Jean(Glenn) McClellan of West Salem,WI and brother - Chuck Wendt of rural Stewartville and his loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Rose, his parents and his brother David Wendt.
A time of visitation for family and friends will take place from 5 to 7:00 PM on Friday (August 7, 2026) at Griffin-Gray FH in Stewartville and 1 hr. prior to the service at the church on Saturday afternoon.
