The Mass of Christian Burial for Walter W. Griffin, 98, of rural Rochester,MN., will be at 1:00 P.M. on Monday (May 13, 2019) at St. Bridgets Catholic Church in Simpson,MN. with Rev. Kevin Connolly officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Mr. Griffin died on Wednesday (May 8, 2019) of natural causes at his home.
Walter William Griffin was born on January 7, 1921 on the family farm in High Forest Twsp, Olmsted County to William and Mary (Adamson) Griffin. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Walter was married on October 27, 1941 at St. Bridgets Catholic Church to Agnes M. Halloran. Following their marriage the couple lived in rural Simpson, where they farmed, raised their family and continued to make their home for their 72 years of marriage. Mr. Griffin has been a lifelong farmer on the Griffin Century farm, established in 1883. Mrs. Griffin was a farmwife and homemaker and also was employed as a unit assistant at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester for 20 years until her retirement. Mrs. Griffin died on December 30, 2013. Walter was a lifelong member of St. Bridgets Catholic Church where he served as a trustee and usher. He also served on the Rock Dell Creamery Board and AgStar Board of Directors. Agnes and Walter enjoyed dancing in their early married years and always have enjoyed playing cards in a neighborhood card club, St. Elizabeths card group at their church and at the Stewartville Senior’s card afternoons. Walter also enjoyed going to coffee, had a great love of horses. He loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Walter is survived by 3 daughters and 3 sons – Mary Frances (John) Gillich of Stewartville; Sheila Griffin of rural Rochester; Patrick(Bridget) Griffin of Rochester; Daniel (Faye) of rural Rochester; Timothy Griffin of Minneapolis,MN. and Roseann(Charles) Melby of Rochester,MN; son-in-law - Al Walczak of Valrico,FL ; 13 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren; 2 sisters – Marilyn(Lowell) Day of Rochester and Sharon Wilson of Mpls,MN; 1 brother – Jim(Patty) Griffin of Rochester and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife – Agnes, son – William and daughter – Kathleen Walczak, his parents, 2 sisters – Bernadine Nessler and Carol Breckle, 2 brothers – Lawrence Griffin and Delmar Griffin.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday (May 12, 2019) at St. Bridgets Catholic Church in the fellowship hall and 1 hr. prior to the service on Monday afternoon at the church.
