Rev. Lawrence Zimmerman Obituary

Rev. Lawrence “Larry” Zimmerman, 83, of Fort Wayne, IN, formerly of Racine, MN, passed away on November 30, 2017 following a short illness.  He was surrounded by his family.

Lawrence Curtin Zimmerman was born on November 18, 1934 at the family home in Frankford Twsp., Mower County, MN to Rolland and Helen (King) Zimmerman. He grew up on the family farm, attended rural school District 35 in Racine through the 5th grade and graduated from Stewartville H.S. in 1952. He attended North Central College in Naperville, IL earning a Bachelors Degree in Biology, and attended Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, receiving his Bachelors Degree in Divinity in 1960. Larry was married on Aug. 17, 1957 to Claudia Banker. Following their marriage the couple lived in or near several communities where he served as Pastor including Basey/Granada (1960 - 1966), Pine River/Pequot Lakes (1966 -1971) and Perham/Richville/Dent (1971 - 1975). They were later divorced.  Rev. Zimmerman moved to Minneapolis and also lived in Bloomington, MN for a few years. Larry was married on Feb. 20, 1977 in Minneapolis to Catherine Ambroz Omacht.  They moved to Slayton/Lake Wilson (1977 - 1986) where Rev. Zimmerman continued his ministry and then on to Dodge Center, MN (1986 - 1990).  After his retirement as a full time Pastor of the United Methodist Church, they moved to Rochester where Larry was employed with Olmsted County District Courts as a Guardian/Conservator until his 2nd retirement in 2005. Cathy and Larry were later divorced.  Larry moved to Fort Wayne, IN in 2017 to live closer to his family.

Family gatherings and family history were important to Larry.  He also enjoyed hiking and camping, gardening, reading, puzzles and games, and traveling. He enjoyed visiting with his many friends and time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.

Larry is survived by 1 daughter and 2 sons - Curt (Cheryl) Zimmerman of Cary, IL; Carla (Rodney) Embree of Fort Wayne, IN and Craig (Laura) Zimmerman of Madison, OH;  step-daughter - Jan (Pete) Omacht /Anderson of Minneapolis, MN and step-son - John (Carmen) Omacht of Stewartville, MN;  3 grandchildren - Isaac Embree, Eden Embree, Emily Zimmerman; 5 step-grandchildren - James Anderson, William Anderson, Charles Anderson, Chase Omacht, Kyah Omacht; his brother - Donald Zimmerman and brother-in-law – Leo Bernard. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister-in-law Maribelle “Terri” Zimmerman. His sister - Eleanor Bernard, died in March of this year.

A Memorial Service/Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville with Rev. Rick Ormsby and Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Refreshments will be served after the service. Burial and a committal service will follow at Salem Cemetery in rural Racine. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to Heifer International in his honor.
